Northern Circuit route

Route Overview

This route offers solitude and an extraordinary experience, steering clear of the heavily trafficked southern paths while providing an excellent chance to reach the summit. The journey begins at Londorossi Gate, situated at an altitude of 2,360 meters, with an approach from Kilimanjaro’s western flank. Following the Lemosho route, the trek winds through the enchanting rainforest, home to rare wildlife and vibrant flora. The trail ascends to Shira Ridge, Kilimanjaro’s third summit, before traversing the expansive and iconic Shira Plateau. Here, trekkers can marvel at the awe-inspiring Shira Cathedral, a natural wonder, before embarking on the Northern Circuit itself.

This less-traveled route along the mountain’s northern slopes offers unparalleled tranquility and seclusion. On clear days, the vistas stretch across the sprawling Amboseli Plains of Kenya. The path eventually merges with the Rongai and Marangu routes in the east, culminating at the summit via Gillman’s Point. Unlike the ascent, the descent follows the Mweka trail, ensuring a varied and comprehensive mountain experience.

The Northern Circuit is ideal for a nine-day trek, particularly for those with limited high-altitude hiking experience. The additional acclimatization day significantly boosts summit success rates. Seasoned adventurers seeking a greater challenge may opt for the more demanding eight-day itinerary.

Today serves as an acclimatization day, as you will ascend more than 650 meters, starting with a walk across a picturesque valley on the outskirts of the Shira caldera rim at 3,600 meters. After several hours of trekking, you will reach the Shira caldera. This high-altitude desert, one of the three volcanic peaks that once erupted in the Kilimanjaro ecosystem, now lies as a collapsed crater. Over time, it has been filled with lava from the Kibo peak, while weathering and volcanic forces have eroded its rim. Your camp for the night will be at Shira One campsite, situated at an elevation of 3,500 meters.

Elevation: 3,500 m to 3,800 m; distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland and Rocky Terrain

Today’s journey takes you eastward across the Shira Plateau, with a planned stop at Cathedral Peak (3,850 m) for acclimatization. After reaching Uhuru Peak, we retrace our steps along the crater rim, stopping at Stella Point before descending through Barafu Camp. Our porters will be waiting with a packed lunch as we continue our descent, eventually reaching Millennium Camp.
